Homemade Red Velvet Cupcakes

Delight in these moist and fluffy homemade red velvet cupcakes topped with creamy cream cheese frosting, perfect for any special occasion or everyday treat.

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • For the frosting:
    • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
    • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 3 cups powdered sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk the sugar and vegetable oil until combined.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Mix in red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar.
  6. Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  7. Divide the batter evenly among cupcake liners, filling each about 2/3 full.
  8. Bake for 18–22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  9. Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting.
  10. To make frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth, gradually adding powdered sugar and vanilla until creamy.
  11. Frost cupcakes as desired and serve.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a teaspoon of espresso powder to the batter or garnish cupcakes with fresh berries.
