Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) beef sirloin, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp sake
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • Wooden skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes
  • Sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, mirin, sake, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and black pepper to create the teriyaki marinade.
  2. Add the beef cubes to the marinade, stir to coat well, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 4 hours for best flavor.
  3. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
  4. Thread the marinated beef cubes onto the soaked wooden skewers, dividing evenly.
  5. Grill the skewers for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until the beef is cooked to your preferred doneness and nicely charred.
  6. Remove the skewers from the grill and let rest for 2 minutes.
  7. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions before serving, if desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, baste the skewers with leftover marinade while grilling and serve with steamed rice or a fresh Asian-style salad.
